Meningococcal Meningitis
- What is meningitis? >> Brain is covered by three layers (meninges) & it is the infection/inflammation of coverings of brain. - What is meningococcal meningitis? >> Meningitis caused by the organism Neisseria Meningitidis. Without treatment it is fatal. - When to suspect meningitis? >> High fever, headache, stiff neck, naussea, vomitting, discomfort in lokking at bright light (photophobia), confusion, sleepiness, irritability, seizure, rashes over the body. In infants & small children these features may be absent & they may show only irritability, sleepiness, poor fedding & vomitting. - What to do in such situations? >> Immediately consult a doctor. - Is it contagious? >> Yes. All members should be vaccinated &/or treated with antibiotics. -
